There are two sides to the eco-friendliness of UPVC spray paint. The first side is the spray paint itself (is it low VOC? Is there any run off, and if so, is it harmful to the environment?) and the second side is whether spraying UPVC is a more eco-conscious choice than buying new UPVC. We’ll address both sides below.
The spray paint
We can’t speak for every professional out there, but we can discuss the paint we use and our own practices with regards to waste.
The UPVC paint we use is a solvent-based paint with low VOC, which means our paint contains less “Volatile Organic Compounds” (VOC) or VOC Solvents than traditional coatings which is better for the environment.
With regards to run off, there isn’t ANY. The paint is sprayed in three coats, thinly and evenly, to create a durable surface. OVERSPRAY is minimal because the spray guns we use have a bespoke nozzle system. This jets the paint with force in a straight line, the effect of which can be seen during application: 99% of the paint sprayed reaches the intended target with overspray confined to the masking area.
Spraying vs replacement
UPVC is a recyclable material but it is nowhere near carbon neutral. The CO2 output to manufacture it is high and recycling and repurposing it doesn’t even this out.
UPVC spraying to refurbish UPVC is therefore a more environmentally-friendly choice because by keeping your older units you aren’t feeding the production of new material. This is a fact, so spraying is the more eco-conscious choice.
You will also save a bundle of money by opting for spraying. UPVC spraying costs are something we’re transparent about – if you budget £150 a window and £230 per door and frame you’re about there. £700 for a 3-bed house is typical. For a detached 5-bed, £1,200 is typical. This is around THREE TIMES LESS than new UPVC units.
The bottom line then is the UPVC paint we use is low VOC, doesn’t harm the local environment and spraying is a more eco-conscious choice than replacing UPVC units. If you want to change the look of your home in an environmentally-friendly way, UPVC spraying is a great choice. Check out some of our recent work here.
