Joe Bunney of Blackpool Football Club got in touch with us recently after looking at his options to change the colour of his UPVC windows. Like most UPVC window installations, his were white but he wanted something darker to match the red brickwork.
We met with Joe to survey his home and discuss the options available. We recommended a few colours and went through the RAL pallet. One of our most popular paint colours – RAL7016 Anthracite Grey (RAL Classic) – was chosen. After being shown a few examples of a matte, satin and gloss finish, Joe opted for a satin finish which has a 30% shine (matte has a 0% shine and gloss has a 100% shine).
Joe’s house is a semi-detached property with a porch and side extension. It’s built from red brick. Darker colours always work best with red brick, however not too dark. RAL7016 Anthracite Grey is an excellent choice for red brick houses.
The work
We booked in Joe Bunney’s house for the following week, weather permitting. Thankfully, the weather was great so we turned up on the Monday scheduled.
We started by cleaning the UPVC of dirt, grime and traffic film. This is an essential step because the spray paint won’t bond to the surface properly if there’s a layer of dirt underneath. Once the windows were clean, we thoroughly masked them off to ensure no overspray would reach the brickwork or glass.
We worked window by window, one at a time. To spray paint UPVC, we use an electric spray painter gun with a unique nozzle system that we developed to deliver even coverage. We apply three coats of paint to each window, leaving 30 minutes between coats. This ensures perfect coverage and an even coat from top to bottom.
Once the third coat was dry, we removed the masking and resealed the windows with a fresh bead of grey silicone. This is the finishing touch that makes it appear as though the windows were originally installed in anthracite grey. You can’t tell they’ve been painted, and that’s the exact look we always strive to achieve.
This wasn’t the biggest project we’ve worked on, but nether-the-less we took our time to get the job done right. We don’t cut corners. This project took us a whole day to complete with a team of workers. Joe Bunney is delighted with the work.
