When we paint uPVC professionally, our aim is to paint it to such a high-quality that it appears as though it was originally installed in the new colour.
This is achieved in two ways: Firstly, we use a high-performance electric spray painting gun, and secondly, we use a high-quality uPVC paint.
By painting your uPVC with a spray painting gun (this is the same way plastic car parts are painted at the factory), you can achieve a fine factory finish and save thousands of pounds on the cost of uPVC replacement.
Here are three good spray gun options for home use:
What paint can be used on uPVC?
When it comes to paint, this is perhaps more important than the gun itself.
uPVC paint can either be specially formulated for uPVC, or it can be standard plastic paint marketed as being compatible with uPVC.
The only difference in most cases between specially formulated uPVC paint and standard plastic paint is the extent of the testing: specialised uPVC paint is plastic paint that has been tested on uPVC and proven to form a good bond. Standard plastic paint that is marketed as uPVC compatible is not as extensively tested on uPVC.
Stay away from spray paint cans
If you intend to paint your uPVC yourself, we recommend that you stay away from spray paint cannisters / cans. They do not jet paint with a high enough pressure and the coverage is patchy at best. Always use a spray paint gun.
uPVC paint options
Now that you know the difference between specialised uPVC paint and standard plastic paint, it is up to you to decide which to go for.
Here are some of the best industry options:
Kolorbond Original
This is a specialised uPVC paint. Unlike regular plastic paint, Kolorbond Original bonds with uPVC on a molecular level. This means there is no chance of it peeling or flaking away. It is self priming and formulated to last 10 years at least.
Zinsser AllCoat
This is an all-surface paint that is especially suitable for plastics and uPVC. It creates a strong, durable surface. Like Kolorbond Original, it is self-priming, so no dedicated primer is needed for the best results. Available in satin and gloss.
Rust-oleum CombiColour multi-surface
This is a multi-surface paint that has been tested on PVC and plastics. It has an Alkynd binder to provide a strong coating over plastic surfaces, protecting them from weathering. Like Kolorbond, it is solvent-based.
Dulux Weathershield Multisurface Quick Dry
Dulux is one of the biggest names in interior paints, but they also do a range of excellent exterior paints. Weathershield Multisurface is one such example. It’s compatible with uPVC with no need for a primer or undercoat.
What is the best uPVC paint?
In our opinion, the best uPVC paint you can buy is Kolorbond Original. We do not use Kolorbond Original ourselves because we have our own supplier, but if we were to choose a brand, Kolorbond offers the closest match in quality to our paint.
